Timecards and Salary History
I was able to locate several boxes of payroll information and the salary ordinances starting in 1952. At that time the Sheriff's Office processed their own payroll and paychecks were issued monthly. In 1976 the County took over payroll and went to bi-weekly timecards, with 28 pay periods each year. This timecard was one of the sergeant's regular nightmares. No matter how long a deputy had been completing the green timecards, mistakes were made on a regular basis. It wasn't to bad if you only had a few deputies working for you, but if you were one of the two sergeants in Transportation and Court Security, you had 50 plus timecards to check and approve. In 2006, the County started an automated time keeping system called ATKS from WorkBrain Inc, but it was an immediate failure and we went back to the green timecards.
In 2009, the County once again implemented the ATKS for payroll. Most departments in the County work a Monday through Friday, 8-5 schedule, but the Sheriff's Office has a 24/7 schedule and the extra codes for nightshift differential, 12 hours shifts or premium pay, just to name a few, caused multiple problems. The solution was to complete the timecards on a weekly basis. It is still a nightmare for the sergeants, but it does work and employees still get their paychecks. Hopefully it will improve in the future.
In the table below, the monthly salaries are in black and the bi-weekly are in blue. These amounts were listed on specific employees payroll cards that I picked at random. An employee in the same classification could make a different amount, depending on which classification they were at, ranging form A-E The black box in some columns are my best guess where some classifications ended, such as Cadets.
