Driver Training Unit
In 1972, two sergeants and four deputies were assigned as the first driver training test group. Two courses were taught, one was the slow stuff, where most "oops" happened, like backing into a parking space or making a quick U-turn in an apartment complex. The second was high speed driving with last second lane changes and full high speed pursuits. All of this is done at the Half Moon Bay Airport, where light air traffic and lots of room allow both to operate simultaneously. On July 22, 1972, Sgt Frank Gordon and Deputy Bruce Horan graduated from the California Highway Patrol's Instructors Driving Course. In 1973, Lt. Paul Hale was assigned and the school was in full swing. Every patrol deputy was required to attend the class, something that in still in effect today. The only change since 1972 are the instructors and newer cars are used. Sgt. Dave Lynch, who started with the unit, still teaches, even though he retired 10 years ago. He has not lost his sense of humor and brings a lot to the class.
